NGNM donates $5,000 to Black Lives Matter

The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis exposes once again the failures of the police reform. US police kill an average of 1,000 people every year and black people are disproportionately among those killed. According to studies, you’re 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than a terrorist. On top of this, African-Americans are 3 times more likely to be killed in police shootings than white people.

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis cop who has been charged with murder in the death of George Floyd, had a spotty career with the police department, including at least 17 investigations into him and 12 complaints. He was also involved in 3 shootings.

Many of the complaints against the killer cop were quickly dropped, and he did not receive any punishment for them. So, the problem is not only the cop who killed George Floyd but also the whole police department who’s complicit by staying silent and refusing to denounce the actions of their colleague. Now you know why we say ACAB.

At NGNM we stand with the protesters and we support all forms of activism including civil disobedience because that’s exactly how the civil rights movement was built in America. What we see in the streets is the outcome of decades of ignoring the existence of racism and inequality. It is the consequence of the culture of unaccountability among police officers.  As Martin Luther King said, a riot is the language of the unheard.

As solidarity protests broke out in cities all across the country, we’ve seen an increase of interest in our t-shirts against racism and police brutality. During the last few days, we have been making 2 to 3 times more sales than usual. This allows us to donate a larger amount than we planned for directly to the Black Lives Matter movement.

We decided to donate to this cause not just for George Floyd but also for the hundreds of others killed by police each year. We are hopeful that this historical movement will be the catalyst we need for a radical social change. This could be the tipping point where we finally repair the injustice done against the Afro-American communities.

It’s time to defund and demilitarize the broken police.
